What is consciousnes?

When we die we lose our body, sense perception, feelings and thoughts, right?

But is it everything there is?

If we were to separate our life into parts there would still be one more thing we left out - our consciousness, the fact that we are aware of our sense perceptions, feelings and thoughts. Now scientists don't have a clear answer about where does the consciousness come from, how does it work. We know tons of facts about brain. In fact we know so much, that it would take a lifetime to learn it all. But we don't have a clear answer to how come we are aware of all these sensations in the world. My guess is that when we die we lose everything that was happening at any given moment. But prehaps we don't lose the consciousnes. Even though I don't know what consciousnes means I know I have it. How do I know it? If it wasn't here, how could I describe these things? If I thought these things are me, how could I speak about them?

That is the space I am talking about in the introduction.
